After church, we prepared for the long desert pass with basic survival gear: 2 gallons of water and 2 big slurpees. The traffic between Las Vegas and San Diego was reminiscent of beach traffic along the 95 corridor back home. However, the landscape provided some entertainment with large pillars of swirling dirt and sand called "dust devils". We stopped to stretch our legs in an old ghost town called Calico. Once a busy mining town during the Gold Rush, the town now offers a glimpse of the past with many of the buildings still intact. We were especially amused with the sign that read, "Hot Baths 25 cents, Used Water 10 cents."
Our next stop was to share dinner with our friends Preston, Krissy, and their daughter Jordan in San Diego. Dan, Preston and Krissy all went to Fairfax High School together, but Preston is originally from California. They have recently relocated back to San Diego, and we were blessed to be able to see all of them, as well as Preston's mom. It is so comforting to see familiar faces and share a home cooked meal when you are out on the road. Their company, laughter, and hospitality were a true gift.
